Create a folder for one tax period

Keep source documents separate from your calculations. A practical folder structure is income, assets, debts, deductions and correspondence. Record missing documents on a short list so that an estimate is never mistaken for a confirmed amount.

If you have moved, changed jobs or experienced a household change, keep the dates and supporting records together. Flag anything that crosses tax periods instead of silently copying last year’s entry.

Check deductions against evidence

Collect evidence before entering a deduction. Depending on your situation, relevant documents may include pension contribution certificates, professional expense records, childcare invoices or donation receipts. Having a receipt does not itself establish deductibility; consult the cantonal instructions for conditions and limits.

Reconcile the worksheet with the documents before filing. For investments, check that both the assets and their income have been considered. For debt, keep the balance and interest information distinct.

Use the official Zurich filing route

The canton’s personal tax return page links to its filing options and guidance. Check the deadline on your own filing notice and request an extension through the relevant authority before that deadline if needed. Do not rely on a generic date copied from a search result.

Our calculator can help you explore a provisional tax scenario. Its printable working paper is not the official return and does not transmit anything to Zurich. After completing the official filing process, retain the submission confirmation with your records.
