Swiss wealth tax: what to prepare for a comparison

For a household with investments, property or business holdings, income tax is only one part of the comparison. Build a separate wealth worksheet before exploring locations.

Keep assets, debts and tax values separate

List each asset category and keep its supporting statement next to the figure. Distinguish the value you would use for personal budgeting from the value required for a tax declaration. Do not assume a property listing price or a private-company valuation is the correct tax value.

Keep debts in a separate column. Their deductibility and allocation need checking against the applicable rules; subtracting every liability mechanically can give a misleading taxable-wealth figure.

Read income and wealth results together

The Swiss cantons and communes tax individuals’ wealth as well as income. A location comparison based only on salary therefore misses part of the picture for asset-owning households.

Run a baseline scenario, then change only the location. Next, explore a second wealth assumption while leaving income unchanged. This helps you see which part of the result is driven by the asset base, without confusing that effect with a change in earnings.

Private-company shares need particular care

If you own a business, the personal value of the shareholding and the company’s own capital are different inputs in the combined model. Our structure calculator can show these layers together, using a simplified share valuation or a value you enter.

That model does not determine the value a tax authority will accept. Keep valuation evidence and review the official cantonal guidance before relying on an estimate. International assets and cross-border allocation may require a separate professional review.

Common questions

Is the result a wealth-tax assessment?

No. Wealth rates and household allowances are simplified. Verify taxable values, deductions and the municipality in an official calculation.

Should I use market value for every asset?

Do not assume so. Use the valuation approach required for that asset and tax period, and retain supporting documents.

Where can I compare a company and its owner together?

Open the structure calculator from the Swiss tools to explore company tax, owner income and the modelled shareholding value together.
